A second display change has been made, and the presentation has a new configuration from today. Its listed exhibition period runs from May 30, 2026, through March 28, 2027.
The presentation displays models and full-scale detail models of the ‘Museum of Modern Art and Museum, Wakayama,’ together with materials from the planning period.
Kurokawa began his career while still a student, participating as the youngest member of the Metabolist architectural movement. He promoted concepts including metabolism, metamorphosis, circulation, intermediate space and symbiosis, while declaring a shift from Le Corbusier’s ‘age of the principle of the machine’ toward ‘the age of the principle of life.’
At the ‘Museum of Modern Art and Museum, Wakayama,’ these concepts extend across the site planning, structure, design and decorative elements. The relationship with Wakayama Castle and the surrounding greenery, along with details including eaves and door handles, expresses the theme of coexistence with history and nature.
The changing presentation also includes materials related to the Nakagin Capsule Tower, completed in 1972 and identified as a representative work of Metabolism, tracing Kurokawa’s architectural path and its surrounding context. The current museum building reopened at its Wakayama City site in July 1994, with the surrounding plan and architectural design by Kisho Kurokawa.
