The Museum of Arts and Crafts will open the exhibition ‘Art of the Old Masters: A Selection from the Painting, Sculpture and Prints Collections’ on 8 October 2026 at the Old City Hall of the Museum of the City of Split.
The exhibition will run through 21 February 2027 and will present Split audiences, for the first time, with a selection of works by major European masters and their workshops from the 14th to the 18th centuries. The organizers are the Museum of Arts and Crafts and the Museum of the City of Split.
The selection includes paintings by Jan Victors, Guido Reni and his workshop, and Andrija Medulić Schiavone, along with works by followers of Paolo Veneziano. It also includes prints after works by Giulio Clovio, Michelangelo Buonarroti and Peter Paul Rubens, as well as representative late Gothic and Baroque ecclesiastical sculptures by masters such as Hans von Judenburg and Johannes Kommersteiner.
Several key works have recently undergone conservation and restoration, revealing previously unknown layers and details beneath their surfaces.
The museum frames the works as evidence of the cultural, political and social changes that shaped Europe, including the territory of present-day Croatia, over the centuries.
