Two years after its presentation in Venice, a Yuko Mohri exhibition will be reconstructed at the Yokohama Museum of Art from July 24 through November 23, 2026. The exhibition will be held in Gallery 9 at the museum.
Mohri represented Japan at the 2024 Venice Biennale, where she presented the solo exhibition 'Compose' under a commission from the Japan Foundation and the curation of Lee Suk-kyung. The installation, transported from Venice to Japan and stored for a period, will be recomposed in the museum’s glass-walled gallery as it responds to the rhythms of a different environment.
Gallery 9 is a newly established glass-walled exhibition space created during the museum’s recent renovation. Unlike the usual return exhibitions of the Venice Biennale’s Japan Pavilion, which are held at the Artizon Museum in Kyobashi, this exhibition will take place in Kanagawa, Mohri’s home prefecture, at the Yokohama Museum of Art.
The exhibition brings together two series: 'More More', a sculpture series inspired by leaks in Tokyo’s subway system and the station staff’s improvised responses with everyday tools, and 'Decomposition', in which the changing moisture content of slowly decaying fruit produces irregular sounds and lights through inserted electrodes.
The compost made from the more than 400 fruits used during the six-month Venice presentation was spread in late March 2025 beneath the slope between the Korean Pavilion and in the garden in front of the German Pavilion. Mohri makes installations and sculptures by combining manufactured products, found objects and devices of her own, focusing on events that change according to environmental and other conditions.
