The restoration presentation will take place on Thursday 1 October 2026 at 4:30pm in Sala 20 of the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, as part of a programme promoted by Amici di Capodimonte Ets. Titled ‘Prima e dopo’, the meeting will address the results, discoveries and new questions concerning the Carracci copies from San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma.
The restored canvases are attributed to Annibale and Agostino Carracci and copy frescoes that decorated the apse of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma, originally painted by Correggio and destroyed during expansion work on the church in 1587. The series is described as the oldest and most complete group of paintings documenting the impact and afterlife of Correggio’s masterpiece.
The conservation campaign lasted one year and focused particularly on recovering the canvases’ textile supports, which had suffered loss of tension, bulging and tears. The restoration improved the legibility of works whose condition had been seriously compromised by surface deposits of atmospheric particulate matter and severe oxidation of the protective coating.
The conservation was accompanied by an initial diagnostic-investigation campaign, which will continue through the ‘Officina Capodimonte – Laboratorio congiunto di ricerche tecniche e scientifiche’ joint technical and scientific research laboratory. Gloria Antoni, curator of sixteenth-century paintings and sculpture at the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte; Alessia Zaccaria, head of the museum’s restoration office; and Valeria Napolitano of Vn Restauro Sas will participate in the meeting.
The restoration was financed through Artbonus funds.
