‘The Botanical Imagination’ presents a new body of paintings by Sydney-based artist Sally Browne, moving between observation and imagination. The exhibition is scheduled to open on Friday 9 October, with an opening from 6 to 8pm, and will run from 9 October through 8 November 2026.
Beginning with birds, flowers, interiors and fragments of landscape, Browne’s works evolve through an intuitive process of layering and revision, allowing familiar forms to shift towards abstraction.
Her recent practice embraces a more open, process-led approach in which botanical references are balanced with abstraction and expressive mark-making. Her paintings also often begin with familiar forms—including flowers, vessels and fragments of the domestic—before loosening and shifting through the process of painting.
The resulting paintings create imagined spaces where the domestic and the wild, memory and nature, quietly converge, bringing those paired realms together within the works.
Originally from the UK, Browne completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School in 2025.
