‘The Pattern of Life: Enid Marx and Modern British Design’ runs from 18 July 2026 to 3 January 2027.
Compton Verney describes the exhibition as the first to explore Enid Marx’s influential patterns, her community and their impact on modern British design in the 20th century. The exhibition will chart Marx’s life through fabric, tracing the geopolitics of British design and the lasting impact of her work.
Marx is best known as the designer of woven London Underground seat-moquette fabric and as an illustrator of children’s books; she also produced hand block-printed textiles from around 1925 to 1940 and later designs for fabrics woven for the public from around 1936 to 1947.
The exhibition includes generous loans from the V&A and the Crafts Study Centre. It also explores Marx’s vision and the artists and designers who inspired her.
