The entire museum has been dedicated to the artist Theodor Kittelsen. The presentation is scheduled to run from 9 May to 4 October 2026 at Koboltgruvene.
The presentation spans tusser and trolls, landscapes and wood carvings, Nøkken and Pesta, oil paintings and drawings, as well as Kittelsen’s bear skull and personal belongings.
The museum identifies ‘Nøkken på hvit hest’ from 1909, ‘Nyttårsny’ from 1905, ‘Husmand’ from 1913 and ‘Bergtrold’ from 1905 as major works in the presentation. Kittelsen’s humor is represented by ‘Nisser og dverge bygger i berget’ from 1907 and ‘Å hutte tu!’ from 1903.
The history of the Kittelsen museum at Koboltgruvene began in 1987, when Kittelsen’s surviving children, Nanna and Helge Theodor, approached Blaafarveværket about building a permanent museum for his art. In connection with that proposal, the children offered to donate a number of objects owned by the family.
Kittelsenmuseet formally opened on 21 May 1993, in a ceremony conducted by King Harald V. Since then, the museum has built up its collection through annual purchases of paintings and drawings.
