The group exhibition 'Ulmie' will open on Friday, 16 October 2026, at 6 p.m. at TKM Bispegata. It presents works by Sissel M. Bergh, Amanda & Stacey Fayant, Meerke Laimi Thomasson Vekterli and Guri Simone Øveraas. Bente Estil, leader of the Standing Committee on Family and Cultural Affairs in Norway’s Parliament, will officially open the exhibition, while Frode Fjellheim and Hildegunn Øiseth will attend the opening.
The artists work across film, installation, photography, textiles, poetry and performance, bringing forward South Sámi and other Indigenous perspectives on history, community and the future. The participating artists live and work in Åarjel-Saepmie, southern Saepmie, with connections extending from the coastal areas of Fovsen to Treaty 4 territory in Canada.
Beginning from the South Sámi region of Åarjel-Saepmie, the artists tell stories about places, memories and communities with roots reaching far back in time. The exhibition foregrounds South Sámi perspectives on the past, present and future and invites audiences to reflect on how people, nature and culture are closely woven together.
It also tells stories about place from a South Sámi perspective, opening for the possibility that colonial wounds can be healed through new narratives and grounding in Indigenous communities and traditional knowledge. The title 'ULMIE' is a South Sámi word that can mean ‘meaning’ or ‘significance’; it can also point to experiences and realizations that cannot always be expressed through words.
