Alex Katz is well-known for his depictions of the Maine landscape, which has been a lifelong source of inspiration for him.
The gallery describes Katz’s landscapes and portraits as employing flat planes of rich colour that evoke the smooth aesthetics of advertising billboards and film.
Katz developed this signature style in reaction against the Abstract Expressionism that dominated the mid-20th century, embracing narrative, figurative clarity and the accessible pleasures of Pop Art instead.
He studied at Cooper Union in New York and spent a summer learning plein-air painting at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
His work has been included in shows at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Arts, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai, among others.
