Setsudai worked as a stage designer.
He was commissioned to create cover illustrations for the magazine ‘Fujin no Tomo’ after being asked to depict scenes resembling landscapes of life in a stage-design manner.
The scenes included factories, ports, greengrocers’ markets and fish markets.
They were rendered in a romantic, softly pale atmosphere.
