The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo will begin distributing flyers for its upcoming exhibition 'Concurrently Clusters - A Shared Perspective on Time and Crossing Boundaries' on September 5, 2026, ahead of the show’s run at the museum from September 5 to December 13. The exhibition takes as its starting point a film about the modernist poetry group Fūsha Shisha formed in 1930s Taiwan, using that lens to revisit the intertwined histories of modern Taiwan and Japan through art, literature, film, music, theater and dance.
According to the museum, the exhibition will bring together approximately 200 artworks and around 500 materials from more than 15 museums and institutions in Taiwan, along with private collections. The list of participating lenders includes major Taiwanese institutions such as Tainan Art Museum, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the National Taiwan Library, the National Museum of Taiwan History and the National Taiwan Museum of Literature, as well as other partners named in the museum’s information.
The project is framed as a major presentation of Taiwanese modern art in Japan. Artists named in the museum materials include Huang Tu-Shui, Chen Cheng-po, Li Mei-shu, Ho Te-lai, Lin Yu-shan, Kuo Hsueh-hu, Hong Rui-lin, Huang Tsao-tsao, Chen Hsiayu and Chuang Shih-ho. The exhibition also incorporates approximately 100 works from Japan, placing them alongside the Taiwanese material to examine historical relationships across regions and periods.
Guest curator Huang Ya-li, a curator and film director, is shaping the exhibition around her film 'Le Moulin' ('Sunday’s Disciples' in the museum text’s contextual description), which won Taiwan’s Golden Horse Award for best documentary. The museum says her curatorial practice seeks dialogue between historical works, archival materials and contemporary sensibilities, and that she previously organized the 2019 exhibition 'Constellation: The Artistic Age of Fūsha Shisha and Cross-Border Art' at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
The display design is by UxU Studio, the Taiwan-based practice founded in 2013 by Chen Kuan-Hung and Chen Ying-Chu. The museum says the installation will use reflective materials and a layout conceived as a structure that generates relationships, turning the entire exhibition space into something like an installation in which viewers move through intersecting works and ideas rather than simply looking at them.
The exhibition is divided into six chapters and will include books, magazines, letters, personal albums and other documents, as well as materials related to literature, music, record production, dance, theater and craft. The museum says these items are not presented as supporting evidence alone but as elements that help form a constellation of modern artistic and cultural activity. A section of materials related to Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples will also be included, placed in new relation to the other works and archives. The exhibition will be held in the museum’s planning exhibition rooms on the first and third floors, with an opening symposium scheduled for September 5 in the museum auditorium and additional gallery talks and symposia planned during the run.
