Krakow Witkin Gallery is exhibiting seven paintings by Scott Hadfield, made in oil and acrylic on canvas since his return to the studio after a 2022 fire destroyed his apartment and studio. The exhibition runs from September 8 through October 10, 2026, with an opening reception with the artist on Saturday, September 19, from 3–5pm.
Hadfield’s previous exhibition at Krakow Witkin Gallery was in 2013, and for a period of two years the artist returned to live at his childhood home in Rhode Island.
In each work, the process of addition builds density while bringing clarity: the sequence of layers remains discernible, revealing which layer was painted over which, while individual strokes retain their positions and directions; each band of color is simultaneously interrelated with and independent of those around it. Although the motif in Hadfield’s paintings is visually different from earlier bodies of work, his process remains strikingly consistent, balancing formal rigor with aesthetic preference to create a surface worthy of extended exploration and a new history to build upon.
Within a formal frame, the landscapes are not descriptive but evoke the unity of “now and then,” continuity and change, and the seamless single fabric of interior and exterior experiences. One exhibited work is ‘A Little Way Into the Wood,’ a 2025 oil-and-acrylic painting on canvas.
The exhibition represents a moment of renewal for Hadfield, personally and artistically, while the paintings offer viewers a space to share in alternating currents of memory, introspection, and hope.
