The Image Centre will present an artist talk with Tanya Marcuse in Toronto on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 7 to 8:30 pm. Marcuse will discuss ‘Book of Miracles’, its three interconnected chapters and her intense process.
‘Portent’, the film component of the project’s second chapter, is currently on view at The Image Centre in Toronto; it is identified as a multi-channel video work and as Part II of ‘Book of Miracles’.
Begun during the pandemic lockdown in 2020, ‘Book of Miracles’ emerged amid wildfires, political and social upheaval. Its three chapters are titled ‘Kingdom’, ‘Portent’ and ‘Emblem’.
Inspired by the sixteenth-century Augsburg Wunderzeichenbuch (‘Book of Miracles’), Marcuse uses photography, staging, fire, paint and found materials to visualize phenomena that seem to defy the laws of nature.
Marcuse’s photographs and videos explore the natural world through elaborate constructions that chart cycles of growth, decay and transformation. In her work, she conveys a sense of awe shot through with foreboding.
