Melissa Auf der Maur: My ‘90s Rock Photographs is on view at the Art Gallery of Ontario until June 6, 2027. The exhibition is organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario.
It presents a selection of more than 200 photographs. Auf der Maur made the photographs while touring with Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins, documenting life backstage, onstage and in the crowd. The exhibition frames the photographs as an insider’s view of the period before smartphones and digital recording.
Auf der Maur is a Montreal-born Canadian musician, photographer, curator and producer who was the former bassist of Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins. The exhibition is co-curated by Sophie Hackett, the AGO’s curator of photography, and Jim Shedden, the AGO’s curator of special projects and director of publishing.
The exhibition stands as a moving self-portrait of a young artist living through the ‘90s music scene, a time capsule of Generation X and a reference for future generations.
