Tanaka began reconsidering community and the position of the other after the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake. That process led Tanaka to focus on the history of Zainichi Koreans and the realities of the discrimination they face.
A massacre of Koreans occurred during the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. Tanaka was born in 1975.
