Toyota Municipal Museum of Art Highlights Jenny Holzer’s 1995 LED Installation

Toyota Municipal Museum of Art is drawing attention to Jenny Holzer’s ‘Installation for Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, 1995’, a work conceived for the institution’s space. Made in 1995 as an LED electronic-sign installation, it carries texts from nine of Holzer’s series in both English and Japanese.

The short statements take on war, violence and sex. Among them are deliberately contradictory lines: ‘Children are the hope of the future’ and ‘Children are the cruelest.’

Since the early 1980s, Holzer has presented her own short texts on advertising-style electronic message boards. ‘Installation for Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, 1995’ brings that longstanding method into a work designed specifically for the museum.
