Rental Sales Gallery to open 'Summer in the City' with urban-themed works by member artists

Rental Sales Gallery, the Portland Art Museum-affiliated venue at 1237 SW 10th Avenue, will open 'Summer in the City: Urban Art' with a free reception on Thursday, August 6, from 4 to 7 pm. The exhibition is part of the gallery’s Artist Spotlight series and is scheduled to run through Saturday, September 5, 2026. The gallery describes the show as a selection of works by member artists inspired by different kinds of urban environments.

The announcement frames 'Summer in the City' as both an exhibition and a sales opportunity. Visitors at the opening reception will be able to meet the artists, see the works first, and rent or buy pieces from the show. That dual purpose aligns with Rental Sales Gallery’s model, which combines exhibition display with an established rental-and-purchase system for contemporary art.

The participating artists named in the announcement are Robert Gleason, Wayne Jiang, Phil Juttelstad, Beth Kerschen, Micah Krock, Byron Merritt, Christopher B. Mooney, Sandra Pearce, Mel Townsend, and Paul Zegers. The gallery says the works in the exhibition are by a select group of its member artists, all of whom create pieces inspired by urban settings.

Examples of work listed on the gallery’s site help indicate the range of visual approaches represented in the show. Robert Gleason’s available and listed works include city and transit-related subjects such as 'Afternoon Traffic', 'Bike-O-Goround', 'Broadway North' and 'Portland Cityscape'. Wayne Jiang’s pieces include 'Afternoon at the ...', 'Condiments at the ...', 'Evening Food Truc...' and 'Red Lanterns', while Micah Krock’s listings include 'Aladdin Theater', 'Bold Blush', 'Pioneer Square' and 'Renner's'.

Other participating artists also appear to work from urban or place-based imagery. Phil Juttelstad’s listings include 'Grain Terminal', 'Lavender Hills (d...)', 'Peaceful Garden', 'Saint Helen's ove...' and 'Waterfront Park R...'. Christopher B. Mooney’s inventory includes 'Abandon Army Barrack', 'Astoria Bridge', 'Climate Control', 'Freeways Marquam ...', 'New York City Win...' and 'Spans II'. Byron Merritt’s work on the site includes photographic pieces such as '350, Toulouse, Fr...', 'Gas Glow 01, Port...', 'Marriott, Atlanta...', 'Mass, Lisbon, Por...' and 'Smoke, New York, NY'.

Beth Kerschen’s items listed online also reinforce the urban focus through titles including 'Crossing the Will...', 'Portlandmark', 'St John's in Summer', 'Steel Bridge in S...' and 'Tower of Portland'. The gallery’s announcement says the exhibition will feature pieces by artists inspired by different types of urban environments, and the online listings show a mix of painting, acrylic, photography, etching and photomontage among the participating artists.

The gallery’s public hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm, and its address is 1237 SW 10th Ave., Portland, OR 97205. 'Summer in the City: Urban Art' opens to the public on Thursday, August 6, and continues through Saturday, September 5, 2026.
