Brenda Cabrera’s solo exhibition ‘La pesca’ opens on 10 September at El Apartamento’s Project Room in Madrid. The exhibition runs through 7 November 2026, with an opening scheduled for Wednesday, 10 September, from 12pm to 10pm.
The exhibition text describes fishing as an act that has endured across eras, recalling its earlier role as an encounter with a territory on which the continuity of life depended. It states that ‘La pesca’ recovers this memory to imagine a different horizon, in which exchange between species displaces logics of appropriation in the relationship with nature.
The scenes of ‘La pesca’ take place in an ocean described as existing beyond recognisable geography. Its waters are connected in the text to a primordial sea, a space where the boundaries between forms remain open. Water is presented as sustaining the possibility of permanent transformation and retaining the memory of a time when identity was open. The text describes Cabrera’s images as extending this condition to consider existence as a continuous flow between diverse states, with transitions involving losses, incorporations and new ways of inhabiting the world.
The exhibition text also identifies scientific research, ritual, ecological knowledge, ancestral reverence for the sea and material exchange as practices converging within this aquatic territory. It presents these approaches as possible forms of knowledge in a shared network of relationships, where aesthetic experience and ethical reflection have equal relevance.
Cabrera was born in Havana in 1997. She trained at Havana’s Academia de San Alejandro in 2017 and at the Instituto Superior de Arte in 2022. Her practice explores painting and drawing, as well as new artistic technologies including NFTs.
Her body of work includes the series ‘Prototipos’, whose figures are described as hybrids that inhabit their own ecosystems. Works listed from the series include ‘El manglar’ (2025), acrylic on canvas, 120 × 120 cm; ‘El préstamo’ (2026), acrylic on canvas, 38 × 38 cm; ‘La hora púrpura’ (2026), acrylic on canvas, 150 × 150 cm; and ‘Acuario’ (2026), also acrylic on canvas, 150 × 150 cm.
Additional works listed in ‘Prototipos’ include ‘La extensión de la vida’ (2026), acrylic on canvas, 70 × 70 cm; ‘La intervención’ (2025) and ‘Los Yakis’ (2025), each acrylic on canvas, 120 × 120 cm; and ‘La piedra preciosa’ (2024), acrylic on canvas, 70 × 70 cm. ‘Retrato familiar’ (2024), also from the series, is an acrylic-on-canvas work measuring 250 × 250 cm.
‘La pesca’ remains on view in the Project Room at El Apartamento, Madrid, from 10 September to 7 November 2026.
