‘Beyond Woodblocks: Japanese Contemporary Prints’ is on view in Ripin Gallery in Oberlin, United States, from 25 July 2026 through 23 May 2027.
The exhibition surveys modern and contemporary Japanese printmaking beyond ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Its first half presents screenprints and lithographs, while the second focuses on etchings and mezzotints. The selection considers approaches ranging from calligraphic abstraction and depictions of traditional architecture to visions of the cosmos and images of fruit and foliage.
Works in the exhibition include Hideo Takeda’s 1994 ‘Horse (White Series),’ from the series ‘Altamira: Moving Sculptures’; Yokoo Tadanori’s ‘Air that is Ground 空其地, ĀKĀŚĀ-BHUMI,’ from the portfolio ‘Shambhala’; and Mayumi Oda’s 1996 ‘Let Wisdom Arise Within Us (Blue).’
