Neue Galerie New York is participating in ‘Klimt vs. Klimt — The Man of Contradictions’, an online retrospective on Gustav Klimt’s art, life and legacy that brings together more than 30 partners and institutions from over 10 countries.
The museum has contributed a story on Klimt’s ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I’ (1907). The work is oil, gold and silver on canvas.
The project includes an augmented-reality Pocket Gallery that digitally assembles 63 of Klimt’s works in a single virtual gallery space, allowing users to navigate the presentation at scale and examine ornamentation and pattern through ultra-high-resolution digitisation.
It also includes digital reconstructions of Klimt’s Faculty Paintings, which were destroyed by fire in 1945. Using archival data and scholarly research, machine learning recoloured images of the works that had been documented in black-and-white photographs. The platform additionally features more than 100 thematic tours incorporating unfinished sketches, videos and digitised ephemera.
