The Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth will open ‘The Statue of Liberty from Bartholdi to Warhol’ on August 15, 2026, presenting an exhibition that follows the monument’s image in American visual culture from the 1870s to the present. The show is scheduled to remain on view through January 3, 2027, on the museum’s second floor, and is being co-organized with the Denver Art Museum.
Timed to the 250th anniversary year of the United States, the exhibition focuses on the Statue of Liberty’s continuing relevance as both an artwork and a symbol. According to the museum, the presentation examines the statue’s many appearances in visual culture, where it has been cast as an artistic muse, a pop-culture icon, and an emblem of immigration, patriotism, and resistance. The Carter says the project spans roughly 150 years of representation.
At the center of the installation is a rare cast of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi’s bronze sculpture ‘Liberty Enlightening the World (Statue of Liberty)’ from 1894–1901. The museum describes the work as one of only five domestic-scale bronze reductions made during Bartholdi’s lifetime. That piece anchors a broader group of nearly 100 artworks and objects by more than 70 artists.
The exhibition brings together painters, sculptors, prints, and other objects to show how artists have represented the statue’s familiar form over time. The Carter’s online exhibition page pairs Bartholdi’s bronze with works including Roy Lichtenstein’s ‘I Love Liberty’ from 1982, Tiffany & Co.’s ‘The Tiffany Trophy (Le trophée Tiffany)’ from 1885, and Henry Yuzuru Sugimoto’s ‘Untitled (Stop Picture Bride)’ from 1965. The museum does not present these works as a full list, but as examples of the exhibition’s range.
The Carter’s announcement also places the exhibition within a broader set of fall programming. A member preview day is set for August 14, followed by ‘Liberty Talks’ on August 15, described as a day of conversations, performances, and other experiences inspired by the statue and by liberty through art, history, music, poetry, and popular culture. The museum’s events listing also includes later programs connected to the exhibition, including tours and family activities.
The museum’s exhibition page notes that the Carter presentation is supported by The Ann L. & Carol Greene Rhodes Charitable Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee, and the Alice L. Walton Foundation Temporary Exhibitions Endowment. The exhibition itself is co-organized by the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and the Denver Art Museum, and is set to open in Fort Worth on August 15, 2026.
