Mickalene Thomas will join art historian Richard J. Powell for the inaugural Susan and Barkley L. Hendricks Artist Lecture at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, on 1 October 2026.
Established through a gift from Susan Hendricks, the annual series honours the legacy of the portrait painter Barkley L. Hendricks. It is designed to bring contemporary artists to campus for discussions of their work and its impact on culture and society.
Thomas and Powell will discuss contemporary art, Black visual culture, representation and identity. The event coincides with the launch of Powell’s book ‘Colorstruck: The History and Politics of Black Colorism’, published by Princeton University Press.
The lecture runs from 6 to 7:30pm and is free to attend, with RSVP required. Registration opens on 14 September.
The Nasher Museum’s collection includes Thomas’s ‘Lovely Six Foota’ (2007), a C-print measuring 56 5/16 by 67 3/8 inches.
