Musée Matisse Nice pairs Henri Matisse and Yves Saint Laurent in summer exhibition

Musée Matisse Nice is presenting 'Henri Matisse ‒ Yves Saint Laurent', an exhibition that brings together the painter and the couturier through their shared interest in the body, material, colour and light. The museum says the two artists never met, but that their works answer one another naturally. The show, subtitled 'Le beau, la mode et le bonheur', is on view until 28 September 2026.

The exhibition is built around a simple comparison: “a painter who looks at clothes, and a couturier who looks at painting.” According to the museum’s newsletter and exhibition page, both Matisse and Saint Laurent treated drawing as an “inexhaustible source of experimentation.” The presentation also focuses on Matisse’s early and sustained attention to textiles in his paintings, where dresses, carpets, fabrics and curtains are described as recurring elements that do more than decorate the picture. In Matisse’s work, they help organise space and shape his use of colour.

The museum also highlights Yves Saint Laurent’s encounter with Matisse through books and exhibitions, and later through works he acquired with Pierre Bergé. That relationship, the museum says, informed his collections. Saint Laurent drew on the artist’s colours, motifs and approach to simplifying forms. The exhibition framework therefore places fashion and painting in direct dialogue without claiming a historical collaboration between the two men.

The catalogue issued for the exhibition extends that cross-reading. Published in French and English, it is a 248-page co-edition of Musée Matisse Nice, Éditions In Fine and Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris. The museum says it is directed by Serena Bucalo-Mussely and Aymeric Jeudy, with contributions from Khémaïs Ben Lakhdar Rezgui, Laurence Benaïm, Domitille Éblé, Claire Gooden, Mouna Mekouar, Victor Sainsot and Popy Venzal. Arteum’s listing for the catalogue notes that it was published in connection with 'Henri Matisse ‒ Yves Saint Laurent. Le beau, la mode et le bonheur'.

Alongside the exhibition, the museum has scheduled a series of guided visits. On the exhibition page, guided tours for adults and visitors aged 16 and over are listed on Saturdays at 11 a.m. from 20 June to 26 September, with additional Wednesday sessions on 29 July, 12 August and 19 August at 11 a.m. The museum says these visits are available by reservation and last about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The listed price is 7 euros per person plus museum admission.

A separate family programme is also posted on the museum’s events pages, including visits for children from 7 years old and practical workshops for different age groups through the summer. On the day of publication of the newsletter, 23 July 2026, the events calendar also included a family workshop at 10:30 a.m. and a Nice Classic Festival concert of percussion at noon in the museum auditorium. The museum specifies that the concert series is organised by the Académie Internationale d’été de Nice under the presidency and artistic direction of pianist Marie-Josèphe Jude.

Musée Matisse Nice is located at 164, avenue des Arènes de Cimiez in Nice. The museum is open daily except Tuesday, with opening hours changing by season, and the exhibition runs through 28 September 2026.
