The Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum in Bremen will present the landscapes of Paula Modersohn-Becker alongside works by five artists associated with Worpswede, offering a focused comparison of their approaches to the subject. The presentation will open on September 19, 2026, in a dedicated room within the museum’s anniversary exhibition ‘BECOMING PAULA’, and will remain on view through February 21, 2027.
The display brings Modersohn-Becker’s landscapes into dialogue with selected works by Fritz Mackensen, Heinrich Vogeler, Fritz Overbeck, Hans am Ende and Otto Modersohn. According to the museum, the comparison is intended to make visible both shared elements and differences between the artists through their treatment of comparable motifs.
The Worpswede artists developed a new approach to landscape painting in the late 19th century and achieved success beyond the region. Their work helped place Worpswede, a small village in Lower Saxony, on the map of art history. The new presentation sets Modersohn-Becker’s landscapes against that artistic context, emphasizing her position as a young painter working in relation to the group.
The presentation forms part of ‘BECOMING PAULA. London Berlin Worpswede Paris’, an exhibition organized around the places connected with Modersohn-Becker’s artistic development as identified by the museum. The Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum is part of the Museums Böttcherstraße in Bremen, which also includes the Ludwig Roselius Museum and the Sammlung Bernhard Hoetger. The museums’ public programme lists regular guided tours of the ‘BECOMING PAULA’ exhibition on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during September 2026.
The museum has previously explored the relationship between Modersohn-Becker and Otto Modersohn. In 2018, it presented ‘Paula Becker & Otto Modersohn. Kunst & Leben’, a juxtaposition of works by the married artists. The accompanying catalogue, described by the museum as nearly out of print, is being issued in a new edition and is available from the museum shop for €20. The publication is presented as a means of examining the working methods of both artists more closely.
The landscape presentation is scheduled at the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum in Bremen from September 19, 2026, to February 21, 2027. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on Mondays.
