Galerie Springer Berlin will present ‘Animals’, a group exhibition bringing together works by Edward Burtynsky, Maria Jauregui Ponte, Ingar Krauss, Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler, Loredana Nemes, Arnold Odermatt, Aitor Ortiz and Stefanie Seufert. Ursula Böhmer and Mirjana Vrbaški will participate as guest artists. The exhibition opens in Berlin on 15 September 2026 and continues through 14 November.
A vernissage is scheduled for 11 September from 6 to 9pm at the gallery, located at Fasanenstrasse 13 in Berlin’s 10623 postal district. The announcement states that some of the participating artists will attend the opening. The exhibition will follow the opening event rather than begin on the same date, with public presentation listed from 15 September.
According to the gallery, the exhibition is not intended as a documentary survey of the animal world. Instead, it focuses on different artistic approaches to animal subjects, ranging from close portraiture and observation to landscape photography, humour and the tension between living creatures and preserved specimens.
Böhmer’s cow portraits from the ‘All Ladies’ series are included alongside Vrbaški’s bird portraits and Nemes’s photographs of donkeys from the ‘Sicilia’ series. Stefanie Seufert’s work considers sparrows, directing attention to a small presence within urban environments. Jauregui Ponte’s animal observations are made primarily at night, according to the exhibition announcement.
Other works extend the subject beyond individual animal portraits. Ortiz’s interpretations of starling murmurations draw on the stillness of the coronavirus period, while works by Arnold Odermatt are described by the gallery as marked by subtle humour. Ute and Werner Mahler approach their subjects from what the announcement calls a humanist perspective, presenting animals with dignity and individuality.
Krauss contributes a taxidermied hare whose lifelike posture blurs the boundary between a living animal and a preserved specimen. Burtynsky’s expansive view of flamingos at Lake Bogoria in Kenya shifts the focus from an individual animal to a wider natural environment. The gallery’s announcement frames that landscape in relation to the dramatic effects of climate change, adding an ecological dimension to the exhibition’s range of animal imagery.
The exhibition brings together the nine named artists in the main group and the two guest artists at Galerie Springer Berlin. ‘Animals’ will be on view from 15 September to 14 November 2026.
