The Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava will present ‘Na zlomu milénií’, an exhibition of contemporary art from its collection tracing artists who entered the Czech art scene around the turn of the millennium. The exhibition will run from 30 September 2026 through 3 January 2027 at Dům umění, the gallery’s main exhibition venue in Ostrava. Its opening is scheduled for 29 September at 5 p.m., with free admission.
The project forms part of the programme marking the centenary of Dům umění, which was founded in 1926. The gallery describes the exhibition as the last of three key projects prepared for the anniversary year. The wider autumn programme draws on the institution’s holdings, presenting them through several historical and artistic contexts, from artists’ books and bibliophile editions to samizdat publications made in the 1970s and Czech art around the millennium.
‘Na zlomu milénií’ will focus on prominent tendencies in post-revolutionary art and on the quality of the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava’s recent acquisitions. The presentation includes Jiří Surůvka, Milena Dopitová, Kamera Skura, Pavla Sceranková and Josef Bolf, among other artists. The selection is framed by the gallery as a survey of practices and figures associated with the period when a new generation entered the contemporary art scene.
A featured work identified in the exhibition material is Pavla Sceranková’s ‘Výzkum’ from 2015. The work uses a Thonet wooden chair, preserving jars with metal lids and bamboo pegs, and is held in the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava’s collection. Its inclusion points to the exhibition’s emphasis on works acquired by the institution as well as on broader artistic developments of the period.
The exhibition will also contain the thirty-third instalment of the gallery’s one-work presentation series, ‘Výstava jednoho díla ze sbírky GVUO’. Singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist David Pomahač selected Margita Titlová Ylovsky’s ‘Lásky panenek’ from 1993, a mixed-media work on canvas. The separate presentation will run from 30 September to 3 January, and the selected work will be shown as part of ‘Na zlomu milénií’.
Dům umění, operated by the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava, is located at Jurečkova 9 in Ostrava. The gallery is a contributory organisation established by the Moravian-Silesian Region. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is closed on Mondays. ‘Na zlomu milénií’ remains on view there until 3 January 2027.
