The Architekturzentrum Wien-curated exhibition ‘Über Tourismus’ will continue its tour in Bruneck, South Tyrol, where it will be presented from Tuesday 8 September through Sunday 25 October 2026, under the English title ‘Toourism’. The exhibition examines how contemporary travel reshapes the built environment, social structures and the climate, while asking whether tourism can be reimagined without destroying the places on which it depends.
The exhibition will be shown at Alte Turnhalle & NoBIS in Bruneck, Italy. Its public run begins on Tuesday 8 September, with the opening on Monday 7 September. The presentation forms part of the Architekturzentrum Wien’s programme of exhibitions that address architecture not only as a design discipline, but also through its social, environmental and political consequences.
‘Über Tourismus’ focuses on the pressures created by the increasing frequency and distance of travel, as well as by shorter holiday stays. Its central questions concern the effects of these patterns on places and communities: how tourism changes the environments that receive visitors, how it alters local social relations, and how its climate impact can be confronted through a different approach to travel and development.
The Bruneck presentation is identified by the Architekturzentrum Wien as a touring exhibition rather than a new exhibition produced specifically for the South Tyrolean venue. The institution’s September 2026 programme also lists ‘Suburbia’, another Az W-curated exhibition, on tour at the afo architekturforum oberösterreich in Linz until 11 September 2026. That parallel presentation considers the history and future of the single-family house in Austria and is separate from the Bruneck project.
‘Über Tourismus’ is curated by Karoline Mayer and Katharina Ritter of the Architekturzentrum Wien. The exhibition architecture is credited to ASAP – Pitro Sammer, while LWZ and Manuel Radde are responsible for the exhibition graphics. The Architekturzentrum Wien, also known as Az W, is based at MuseumsQuartier in Vienna and operates an exhibition programme, a collection and a specialist library. Its current programme includes the permanent collection presentation ‘Hot Questions – Cold Storage’, which uses original objects to examine Austrian architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries, and ‘Global – Neutral. Architecture from Austria in Africa and Asia 1955–1989’, a collection-based exhibition addressing Austrian architects’ work in Africa and Asia during the Cold War and the period of decolonisation. The touring programme places ‘Über Tourismus’ within that broader institutional interest in the ways architecture intersects with society and the environment.
A book accompanying ‘Über Tourismus’ has also been published and is listed by the Architekturzentrum Wien among the titles available through its shop and online store. The exhibition will remain at Alte Turnhalle & NoBIS in Bruneck from 8 September to 25 October 2026.
