The New Orleans Museum of Art’s exhibition ‘Robert Gordy: Outside the Mainstream’ has been highlighted in a recent article by Jeremy Lybarger for the Oxford American. NOMA’s exhibition page describes the show as the first in-depth presentation of Gordy’s work at the museum in over four decades, drawing on selections from the 1950s until the artist’s death in 1986. The museum states that the exhibition is drawn from NOMA’s permanent collection, the archive of the Robert Gordy estate, and loans from private collections. It notes that Gordy (1933–86) worked across a range of media, turned almost exclusively to monotypes from 1982, and preferred, in his own words, to work “outside the mainstream.” No curator is named in the museum’s published material, and the newsletter does not give the dates of the 1981 retrospective.
Founded as a major collecting institution in New Orleans, NOMA describes its collection and exhibitions as spanning three floors and ranging from ancient art to the present day. Its programme also includes the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, which the museum says is free and open seven days a week. The Gordy exhibition is identified specifically as being on view at the museum.
NOMA’s current public information lists regular museum hours as Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm, with extended Wednesday hours from noon to 7pm.
