The Brandenburgisches Landesmuseum für moderne Kunst (BLMK) is in the final days of ‘Alles Gute, lieber Hans. Hans Scheuerecker zum Geburtstag. Werke aus der Sammlung des BLMK sowie Privatsammlungen’, a birthday exhibition for the Cottbus artist Hans Scheuerecker at the Dieselkraftwerk in Cottbus. It opened on 30 May 2026 and closes on Sunday 23 August 2026.

The show marks Scheuerecker’s 75th birthday and draws on the museum’s own holdings alongside external loans from private collections. According to the BLMK, that group of paintings, prints, posters and sculptures has been built up gradually and systematically since the 1970s, and documents both the range and the continuities of an oeuvre spanning almost 50 years.

The museum describes work in which the pictorial gestures became steadily more graphic and schematic while the palette narrowed towards clear primary colours. An early orientation towards art-historical iconographies and the formal vocabulary of the early twentieth century, in particular its expressive tendencies, gave way to formal reduction and flat areas of colour. Across those shifts, the museum writes, the human figure in all its existential shadings remained the constant.

The exhibition opened with a vernissage on Friday 29 May 2026 at 7pm, with a greeting from the mayor of Cottbus, Tobias Schick, an introduction by BLMK director Ulrike Kremeier and music by Chris Hinze. Kremeier led three guided tours through the show, on 18 June, 2 July and 6 August 2026; the museum lists no further public programme before the closing date.

The anniversary was also marked outside the museum: the two-part exhibition ‘Unangepasst. Unverkennbar. Hans Scheuerecker’ was shown at the Kunsthalle Lausitz and the Segeltuchfabrik from 28 May to 8 August 2026.

At the Dieselkraftwerk the Scheuerecker presentation runs alongside Chris Hinze’s ‘Fragmente eines Wegs. Raum der Stille’ (25 April – 23 August 2026) and ‘Fremde und Freiheit. Mona Höke und Kathrin Karras. Pückler – Dialog über einen Kosmopolit’ (20 June – 23 August 2026), which close on the same day. Two new shows follow at the venue: ‘Ungebremste Selbstbewegungen. Kunst mit Fotografie in der DDR’, from 29 August to 15 November 2026, and ‘Der grelle Schein der Ränder. Jonathas de Andrade und Werke aus der Sammlung des BLMK’, a co-operation with the Lausitz Festival, from 30 August to 15 November 2026.

The BLMK is funded as part of the Brandenburgische Kulturstiftung Cottbus und Frankfurt (Oder) by Brandenburg’s Ministry of Science, Research and Culture and by the cities of Cottbus and Frankfurt (Oder). Its venues are the Dieselkraftwerk in Cottbus and the Packhof and Rathaushalle in Frankfurt (Oder).

‘Alles Gute, lieber Hans’ is on view at the Dieselkraftwerk, Uferstraße/Am Amtsteich 15, 03046 Cottbus, open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm, until 23 August 2026.
