The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts has announced the loan of ‘Sunset Over the Ocean’ (1860), a landscape attributed to Sanford Robinson Gifford, for the exhibition ‘Kindred Spirits: Artists in the Tenth Street Studio Building’. The oil painting on canvas comes from the Snouffer Family Collection and is being presented as an opportunity for visitors to encounter Gifford’s treatment of light, sky and atmosphere.
Gifford (1823–1880) was one of the leading figures of the second generation of Hudson River School painters, according to the museum. Although he trained as a portrait painter, he became known for tranquil landscapes that focus on the quiet beauty of the natural world. His luminous approach helped define Luminism, an American landscape tradition associated with subtle light, expansive skies and a contemplative sense of space.
‘Sunset Over the Ocean’ reflects those qualities through its emphasis on atmospheric effects. The museum describes the work as an “exquisite landscape” and highlights Gifford’s mastery of light and atmosphere. The attribution is identified by the museum as Sanford Robinson Gifford rather than presented as an unequivocal authorship claim.
The painting also connects the exhibition to the artistic community that developed around New York City’s Tenth Street Studio Building. Gifford maintained a studio there alongside painters including Frederic Church, Albert Bierstadt and Jervis McEntee. The artists shared ideas and travelled together, contributing to the development of American landscape painting in the period.
The museum’s account places Gifford within several of those artistic networks. He studied under Church at the National Academy of Design, later travelled through Europe with McEntee and explored the American West with Bierstadt. In 1869, he travelled to Egypt with Church. These associations form part of the contextual framework used by the museum to present ‘Sunset Over the Ocean’ in relation to the Tenth Street Studio Building and its circle.
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, located in Hagerstown, Maryland, says it has been free to the public since 1931 and serves Hagerstown, Washington County and the surrounding four-state region.
