Daily Brief — 8 October 2026

Three exhibitions foreground ambitious encounters between artist, institution and setting: a rare Higashiyama presentation in Osaka, a renewed sculptural route through Milan’s Brera, and Tai Shani’s first international co-commission at Jupiter Artland.

Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka is planning the first large-scale presentation of Kaii Higashiyama in Osaka City in 45 years. Scheduled for October 2027, the retrospective will bring together approximately 90 works, including The Afterglow, The Path and Green Echoes, alongside works from private and corporate collections that have rarely been shown publicly. Its centrepiece will be an almost full-scale recreation of Toshodaiji’s Mido Hall interior, displaying Higashiyama’s monumental paintings across five rooms and 68 sliding-door panels. The exhibition will also show the preparatory drawing for the Imperial Palace mural Dawn Tide at its finished scale.

Pinacoteca di Brera’s La Bellezza e l’Ideale, on view through 17 May 2027, gives Antonio Canova’s sculpture a dedicated route within the museum. Curated by Chiara Rostagno and Valentina Ferrari, the presentation places twelve restored plaster busts—loaned by Banca Ifis and shown in Milan for the first time—in the renewed Sala 1. Canova’s marble bust La Vestale has also returned to Brera after more than a century, alongside enamel miniatures from Giovanni Battista Sommariva’s collection. The installation is presented as part of Brera’s connection with Neoclassicism and its continuing collaboration with Banca Ifis.

From 29 October, Jupiter Artland will present M.I.A.S.M.A., a major exhibition by Turner Prize-winning artist Tai Shani. Co-commissioned with Kunsthalle Bern, The Busan Biennial and Groninger Museum, it is Jupiter’s first international co-commission. Reimagining Antigone, the work combines sculpture, image, sound and architecture in an immersive meditation on mourning, invisibility, love and resistance amid political, ecological and moral crisis. Shani’s The Spell or The Dream will be shown at the same time in Jupiter’s orchard, where it offers a landscape-scaled meditation on suspended time, myth and collective dreaming.
