Toshiko Takaezu

1922–2011

Toshiko Takaezu was an American ceramic artist, painter, sculptor, textile artist, and educator. She worked with various mediums including ceramics, weavings, bronzes, and paintings, and was known for her innovative ceramic forms that emphasized aesthetic expression over functionality. Takaezu played an important role in the international revival of interest in ceramic arts and incorporated abstract expressionist concepts into her work. She was of Japanese descent and from Pepeeko, Hawaii.
