1887–1986
American modernist painter whose seven-decade career established her as a pioneer of American modernism. Known for monumental close-ups of flowers, bones, and desert landscapes, particularly from New Mexico, O'Keeffe created works that appeared abstract while remaining grounded in careful observation. She insisted on recognition as an artist rather than a woman artist, establishing a distinctive visual language that profoundly influenced later generations.
