The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena will host a lecture on Edgar Degas’ monotype practice on Saturday 29 August 2026, with Danielle Canter of the J. Paul Getty Museum discussing the artist’s innovative use of the medium. The talk, titled 'The Artist at Play: Degas and Monotype', runs from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the museum’s theater.

According to the museum, the lecture centres on Degas’ encounter with monotype in the 1870s, an unusual printmaking method that yields a single impression. The technique gave him a rich avenue for experimentation, letting him blur the boundaries between mediums as he played with ink, paint and pastel. The museum says the program will draw on what it calls its extraordinary holdings of Degas monotypes, setting the collection in direct relation to the artist’s process.

Canter is listed by the museum as Assistant Curator in the Department of Drawings at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Attendance is free with museum admission. Advance registration is open to members only; walk-up tickets for all visitors are released at 4:00 p.m. on the day of the program. Doors open 30 minutes before the start, and advance ticket-holders can check in at the Membership Desk between 12:00 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. to collect a seat sticker, though seating is not assigned. The museum asks everyone to be seated by 4:50 p.m. and warns that latecomers may forfeit their ticket.

The talk sits within a wider summer program at the Norton Simon that includes film screenings, gallery talks, family activities and the closing installment of 'Golden Hour: Music in the Garden' on 28 August. The museum is at 411 West Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, California 91105.
