The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa is taking applications for a workshop led by choreographer and performer Ikumi Kurosu on August 6, 2026. The two-hour session, scheduled for 6 pm to 8 pm, is described as a hands-on workshop focused on the ideas and bodily expression involved in making a work, rather than on learning dance technique.
According to the museum’s event page, the workshop will take place at the museum’s Project Studio and is open to people interested in physical expression, including those with backgrounds in theatre and music as well as dance. No dance experience is required. The fee is 2,000 yen, with free admission for high school students and younger.
The museum frames the session as part of its wider learning and performance-related programming, and also as a participatory introduction to a larger creative process. Kurosu’s workshop is presented under the banner of 'Choreographers 2026 Kanazawa', a project organized by NPO JCDN and co-hosted by the museum. The event page says the workshop is part of the museum’s performance season project titled 'Chain of Viewing' ('Renraku suru Kangaku').
The workshop description says participants will begin from their own interests, experiences and ways of seeing, and use those as a starting point for creating. Rather than teaching choreography, Kurosu says he will work alongside participants to draw out their perspectives and ideas. The listed aims include learning how to shape ideas into form, developing concepts from everyday events and experiences, collaborating with others, facing open-ended questions and gaining confidence in expressing one’s own senses and thoughts.
Kurosu is identified on the museum page as the head of Bushman and a member of Condors since 2018. The profile says he has drawn attention for a distinctive worldview that explores unusual forms of physicality, and that he has presented work at venues including Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre’s Theatre West and Setagaya Public Theatre’s Theatre Tram, as well as in locations across Japan. The same profile notes invitations to Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Hungary, Romania and Malaysia.
The page also says Kurosu has actively carried out workshops and outreach activities for people with and without dance experience, including disabled participants, children and older adults, in order to convey the enjoyment of movement, the diversity of expression and the possibilities of communication beyond language. It adds that he is a registered artist in Japan’s public hall contemporary dance revitalization program and that he plans to open a community-based dance studio, 'Studio DO', in April 2026.
A separate participation track is also being offered for those who want to continue creating after the workshop. The museum says a 12-session creative workshop will run from September 25 to October 20, 2026, leading to a performance at the museum’s Theatre 21 on October 24 and 25. Applications for the August 6 workshop are open until August 15, 2026, with details available through the museum’s event page.
