The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk is set to host a free community evening of music, art and film on August 6 with 'Mixtape: Film Break in the Garden', part of its 'Mixtape First Thursdays' series. The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. and does not require registration, according to the museum’s event listing and August email agenda.

This month’s edition centers on Film Break Society’s presentation of 'Wild Style' (1983), which will be screened in Mary’s Garden. The museum describes the program as “your chance to wine and unwind during an evening of community connections and art,” and says the event is funded through the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All initiative.

The evening is built as a layered, drop-in experience rather than a single screening. Before the film, FRESHTOPIA will spin and sell records, while BeatHunter leads an interactive hip hop and breakdancing experience tied to the culture of 'Wild Style'. The museum also says Creative Well Arts Foundation will lead art-making activities, and The Passion Network will host a scavenger hunt.

Additional components include cocktails mixed by Josh Seaberg of Model Citizen, along with participation from Norfolk Innovation Corridor. The event page also notes that light fare and drinks will be available for purchase at Zinnia through 9 p.m., and that visitors can move through the museum’s galleries and exhibitions on view until that time. A Digital Detox station is also listed among the ongoing activities.

The film itself is framed by the museum as a landmark in hip-hop culture. The Chrysler’s event description says 'Wild Style' follows South Bronx graffiti artist Shy Zoro, who is commissioned to paint a backdrop for a rap and break-dance concert during the early age of the rap industry. The screening begins at dusk, listed at 8:30 p.m. on the event page.

'Film Break in the Garden' sits within the Chrysler’s broader August programming, which the museum grouped under an email titled 'Your August Arts Agenda 🎨'. That roundup also includes WHRO’s 'Play Your Heart Out' on August 16, 'Second Saturday Open Studio' with Clayton Singleton on August 8, and the Perry Glass Studio’s Visiting Artist Series featuring Danny White, also known as Ethan Windy. But the Mixtape event remains the month’s main community-facing nighttime gathering, combining a film screening with live music-related and participatory activities in the museum garden.
