The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is presenting Andrea Carlson’s first museum survey, titled A Constant Sky, in Sarasota through Nov. 15. Installed in the Keith D. Monda Gallery for Contemporary Art, the exhibition places Carlson’s mixed-media work at the center of The Ringling’s contemporary program and extends the museum’s recent emphasis on exhibitions that connect art history, museum practice and social critique.
The show is part of the Museum of Art’s broader effort to keep contemporary work in active conversation with the institution’s historic collections and research mission. According to The Ringling, A Constant Sky is the first museum survey of Carlson, a mixed-media artist born in 1979 and descended from Grand Portage Ojibwe and European settlers. Her work challenges colonial narratives as they appear in modern art, museum collections and cannibal genre horror films. That framing makes the exhibition notable beyond a single museum season: it highlights how contemporary artists are increasingly revisiting the authority of institutions and the stories they have inherited or helped shape.
The exhibition is included with museum admission and is on view in the Keith D. Monda Gallery for Contemporary Art, an important venue within The Ringling’s Museum of Art for presentations of living artists and current debates in the field.
