The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, is preparing a yearlong youth programme that places teenagers and young adults inside the workings of live performance. Titled "Dramatic! Youth Plaza 2026," the initiative will run from July 2026 through March 2027 and is aimed at high school students and young people aged 15 to 20. The museum is framing the project as a place to gather, explore and experience performing arts through workshops, tours, talks and participation-based events.

According to the museum’s programme page, the core venue will be the museum’s Theatre 21 and its exchange zone, with one planned bus tour to Aichi Arts Center. The first public event is an activity information session and backstage tour at the museum on July 10, 2026. That event is listed as free, with no advance reservation required, and is open both in person and online. Participants attending on site will be taken behind the scenes at Theatre 21 after the introduction session.

The museum says the programme is designed for youth who are interested in seeing, making or presenting performing arts, or who are looking for a new place to spend time and explore. Its materials describe the project as a kind of “another place” outside school and home, where participants can encounter dance, theatre, film, music and workshops while discovering “what I can do” and “the joy of creating together.” The museum also notes that parents and education professionals may register as supporters, and that sign-language support is available for those who request it in advance.

A major component of the schedule is a day trip on September 20 to Aichi Arts Center for a dance and rap production, "Arika," mounted by Aichi Arts Center to mark its 10th anniversary return run. The museum lists the outing as a same-day trip for high school students and 15- to 20-year-olds, with a participation fee of 1,500 yen covering the charter bus and lunch; the performance ticket itself will be free. The day includes a special talk and Q&A before the show, with Airi Karatsu of Aichi Arts Center listed as a guest.

Another strand of the programme turns backstage skills into a learning opportunity. On October 9, participants can join a film projection observation session for the Hisakazaka Cinema Club at Theatre 21, where they will be able to take part in actual screening work with specialist staff. The museum says the session will focus on 16mm-style film projection and will include rehearsal participation and screenings of two classic Japanese films: "Nippon Museigyo Jidai" (1962) and "Kimi mo Shusse ga Dekiru" (1964).

The broader schedule also includes informal youth discussion meetings in August, October and December, as well as free invitations to museum-produced performances at Theatre 21 from October onward. The museum lists another public-facing event, Open Marubi 2026, on November 3. Together, the planned activities show the museum extending its educational mission beyond exhibitions into performing arts, production, access and peer-led exchange.

For the museum, the significance of "Dramatic! Youth Plaza 2026" lies in how it broadens the role of a contemporary art institution. Rather than treating young audiences as spectators alone, the programme invites them to enter rehearsal spaces, talk with artists, observe technical work and take part in shaping the experience. In a museum context that already includes theatre and learning programmes, the project positions performing arts as a route to participation, community-building and long-term audience development among the next generation.
