The Blanton Museum of Art in Austin will host artist, comic book creator and radio host Javier Hernandez for a one-hour ‘Art with an Expert’ program on August 8, bringing comics into its Blanton All Day series. The talk, titled ‘Comics & Culture: Javier Hernandez’s “El Muerto,”’ is scheduled for 3 to 4 p.m. and is included with Blanton All Day admission.

According to the museum’s event page, Hernandez is best known for creating ‘El Muerto: The Aztec Zombie.’ The Blanton says his work is currently featured in its Latino art gallery highlight, ‘There Goes My Hero: Comics and Luchadores.’ The museum describes the program as part of its Blanton All Day programming, which offers hour-long talks by guest speakers on topics ranging from art histories to broader cultural subjects.

The museum’s listing identifies Hernandez as a guest speaker from Whittier, California, and says the session will offer a career-spanning retrospective on his time in comics and film. The talk is also billed as a chance to hear Hernandez discuss his inspirations and influences, as well as what it takes to survive as an independent creator. The description places the event within the Blanton’s ongoing effort to present conversations with artists, curators and historians in a public-facing format.

The August 8 program is not a stand-alone lecture series, but part of Blanton All Day, the museum’s day-long admissions program that gives visitors access to the museum grounds, galleries and ‘Austin’ by Ellsworth Kelly. The museum notes that advance reservations are recommended and that ‘Art with an Expert’ is included in Blanton All Day admission and free for Blanton members.

In addition to the talk, the museum says selections from ‘El Muerto: The Aztec Zombie’ will be available for purchase in the Museum Store, followed by a book signing after the program. The event page also states that support for ‘Art with an Expert’ is provided by the Carolyn Harris Hynson Centennial Endowment.

The Blanton lists the event for Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin. The museum’s calendar places the program alongside its broader run of Blanton All Day activities for the weekend, but the Hernandez talk is the featured ‘Art with an Expert’ presentation for that date.
