The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., will host a one-hour in-gallery program on July 30 exploring the legacy of modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan through live performance and conversation. Titled 'Gallery Experience: The Revolutionary Legacy of Isadora Duncan,' the event is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. on the museum’s second floor, and no reservations are required.

The program will be led by Word Dance Theater and is described by the museum as a dynamic presentation focused on Duncan’s impact on dance and performance. According to the Hirshhorn, the session will consider Duncan’s spirit of rebellion, including her rejection of ballet’s traditionally rigid forms, and will pair that discussion with live performance inside the gallery.

The event is tied to works currently on view in 'Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection, 1860–1960,' where visitors can see nine sketches of Duncan dancing by Russian American artist Abraham Walkowitz. The museum says Walkowitz began producing these drawings as early as 1910 and ultimately created thousands of ink drawings inspired by Duncan’s performances, attempting to capture both her likeness and her kinetic force.

The inclusion of Walkowitz’s drawings places the program within the Hirshhorn’s broader collection presentation, linking dance history to modern art through the museum’s exhibition schedule. Rather than treating Duncan as a separate figure from visual culture, the gallery experience uses her as a point of contact between live movement, artistic interpretation, and the collection itself.

The museum’s notice frames the event as a drop-in experience, emphasizing accessibility for visitors already on site. It also places the program within a larger set of summer offerings highlighted by the Hirshhorn, though this event is distinct from the museum’s other programming listed in the same newsletter.

For visitors, the format is straightforward: an in-gallery performance and conversation with Word Dance Theater, connected to Walkowitz’s sketches of Duncan, on Thursday, July 30, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden’s second-floor galleries.
