Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha will pair an exhibition visit with an off-site photography walk in a community partnership program scheduled for July 25. Titled 'Gallery Talking & Photography Walking,' the three-hour session begins in the museum’s 'Through the Lens: American Photographs from the Carter Collection' before participants travel by personal vehicles to The Union for Contemporary Art for a photography walk in its Abundance Garden and a darkroom activity in the Co-Op Studios.

The program is structured as a guided encounter with the museum’s photography exhibition, followed by hands-on work at The Union. According to the museum, staff will lead conversations in the galleries and give participants time to look closely and reflect on selected works. The second portion of the program moves to The Union, where staff there will lead the outdoor photography walk and then offer participants a chance to develop a print of their own work in the darkroom.

The museum says the program will be offered three times, on May 30, June 27 and July 25, with participants choosing one date. The July 25 session runs from 10 am to 1 pm and requires registration. General admission is listed at $35, or $30 for Joslyn members and The Union Co-Op Passholders.

'Through the Lens: American Photographs from the Carter Collection' is on view at Joslyn Art Museum through Aug. 16. The linked event page says the exhibition includes work by artists including Ansel Adams, Carrie Mae Weems, Laura Gilpin, Gordon Parks, Diane Arbus, Arthur Rothstein, Dawoud Bey and Alec Soth, among many others. The exhibition is ticketed, with admission free for Joslyn members and those 12 and under.

The July 25 program places particular emphasis on photographic looking and making. The museum’s description notes that participants will use 35mm cameras, and that The Union for Contemporary Art has a small number available to share. Visitors who have a 35mm camera are encouraged to bring it.

The collaboration also ties the museum’s gallery-based programming to a local arts venue that includes the Abundance Garden and the Co-Op Studios’ darkroom. The linked event page includes an image crediting Laura Gilpin’s 'White Sands' as a pictured work from the exhibition, underscoring the show’s focus on American photography drawn from the Carter Collection and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth.
