The vernissage for ‘Jean Gaumy et la mer’ is scheduled for Friday 30 October from 18:00. The exhibition will take place at Villa Tamaris Centre d’Art TPM in La Seyne-sur-Mer.

‘Jean Gaumy et la mer’ runs from 31 October 2026 to 17 January 2027. The exhibition is produced in partnership with the Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie, where the featured photographic collection is preserved.

Its maritime subjects include fishing, the open sea, the trauma of oil spills, submarine interiors and polar exploration.

Its locations include Normandy, Greenland, Andalusia, Long Island and the Gironde. Across those places, the exhibition moves from documentary reportage toward more contemplative photography.

Jean Gaumy is identified as a member of Magnum, a member of the Académie des beaux-arts and an official painter of the French Navy. Gaumy describes his practice in these words: ‘Photographier c’est comme pêcher ou écrire. C’est sortir de l’inconnu qui résiste et refuse de venir au jour.’
