Matthew Barney to Deliver AIR Aspen Keynote on July 31

Aspen Art Museum has added Matthew Barney to the Bluhm-Kaul Keynote lineup for AIR 2026, with the artist scheduled to speak on July 31 at 11 a.m. at Aspen Meadows, Paepcke Auditorium, in Aspen. The keynote is presented within AIR Aspen’s July 27–31 program and is listed as requiring registration. Barney’s appearance follows his earlier AIR-related project ‘TACTICAL parallax,’ presented in 2025, and comes alongside the 2026 presentation of ‘ZONE DEFENSE: Old Snowmass Parallax,’ a new large-scale installation tied to the same body of work.

According to AIR Aspen’s event materials, Barney has spent more than three decades producing sculptures, performances, and films that build symbolic worlds where ritual, history, spectacle, and violence intersect. The program text describes his recent work as returning to the shared mythologies of the Western frontier, the Broadway spectacle, and the football field, and notes that he asks how stories are inscribed, embodied, passed down, and restaged in the landscape. The keynote page also situates Barney’s practice through recent film projects including ‘Redoubt’ (2018) and ‘SECONDARY’ (2023).

The AIR materials place the new keynote in direct relation to Barney’s 2025 site-specific performance ‘TACTICAL parallax,’ staged in a former military drill hall in Old Snowmass. That work brought together characters, stories, movement, and visual vocabularies drawn from ‘Redoubt’ and ‘SECONDARY,’ while also referencing Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and Broadway spectacle. The 2026 installation ‘ZONE DEFENSE: Old Snowmass Parallax’ is described as extending the narrative and spatial logic of that performance, with the AIR site page saying it is positioned on an open field adjacent to the original performance location.

The installation page offers further detail about how the new work is conceived. AIR describes ‘ZONE DEFENSE: Old Snowmass Parallax’ as a monumental sculpture that continues Barney’s investigation into physical endurance, mythology, and material transformation. It is sited on a large expanse at Rose Ranch, framed by the Rocky Mountains and adjacent to the site of last year’s performance at McCabe Ranch. The work is organized around athletic end zone markers and diagonal axes that intersect at the central object, and the page notes that its composition recalls both ‘TACTICAL parallax’ and the diagrammatic logic of ‘SECONDARY.’

Barney’s keynote arrives within a broader AIR 2026 schedule that also includes keynote talks by Miranda July and Julie Dash. The July 13 announcement from AIR Aspen said Barney was added to the lineup, and it framed his return as a continuation of the festival’s commissioning and conversation program. AIR materials identify the Bluhm-Kaul Keynotes as made possible through a major gift from Barbara Bluhm-Kaul and Don Kaul.

The July 31 keynote is listed for Aspen Meadows, Paepcke Auditorium, at 1000 N 3rd St, Aspen. AIR Aspen also notes that shuttle service will operate from the Aspen Art Museum for the event and that accessibility accommodations can be requested in advance by contacting air@aspenartmuseum.org.
