Buenos Aires’ Malba Cine is dedicating the whole of July to Lita Stantic with ‘Lita Stantic: no habrá nadie igual’, a retrospective that traces the producer’s career from her beginnings in Argentine short-film circles in the 1960s to her later support for younger filmmakers. The program runs throughout the month in the museum’s Auditorio and presents a substantial selection of her filmography.

Malba describes Stantic’s career as singular and long-form, moving from short-film activity in the 1960s to work in advertising, then to assistant direction on ‘Mosaico’ by Néstor Paternostro, and later to production leadership, including on Lautaro Murúa’s classic ‘La Raulito’. The museum’s announcement frames her as a central figure across several generations of Argentine cinema, noting her role in accompanying the early personal projects of Alejandro Doria and María Luisa Bemberg.

The retrospective also situates Stantic within the history of feminism and the country’s cinematic public life. According to Malba, she shared a feminist outlook with Bemberg and built a career with both local impact and international reach. The museum highlights ‘Un muro de silencio’ as one of the most important films about Argentina’s dictatorship, placing it among the works associated with Stantic’s name.

The July cycle is also presented as a recognition of her long-standing commitment to contemporary Argentine cinema. Malba says that from the late 1990s onward she was the only producer of her generation to consistently support the new Argentine cinema, backing directors including Pablo Reyero, Lucrecia Martel, Adrián Caetano, Diego Lerman and Pablo Trapero. The museum adds that this support has continued into the present, citing ‘Errante’, by Adriana Lestido, and ‘La guardería’, by Virginia Croatto, as recent examples of audacious and necessary films she has backed.

The program’s schedule spans the month with screenings clustered on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It opens on Thursday 2 July with ‘La niña santa’ by Lucrecia Martel, ‘Yo, la peor de todas’ by María Luisa Bemberg and ‘Un oso rojo’ by Adrián Caetano, followed by ‘La parte del león’ by Adolfo Aristarain on Friday 3 July and ‘Un muro de silencio’ by Lita Stantic on Saturday 4 July.

Later dates continue with a mix of films closely tied to Stantic’s production work and to the directors she supported: ‘Miss Mary’ and ‘La ciénaga’ on 9 July, ‘Tan de repente’ on 9 July, ‘La guardería’ on 10 July, ‘Habi, la extranjera’ on 11 July, ‘Hamaca paraguaya’ on 17 July, ‘Errante’ on 18 July, ‘Café de los maestros’ on 23 July, ‘Dársena Sur’ on 24 July, ‘Camila’ on 25 July, ‘Cordero de Dios’ on 30 July, ‘La deuda’ on 31 July and ‘Bolivia’ on 1 August. Malba Cine’s full retrospective is scheduled for throughout July 2026.
