The Palace of Versailles is marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a summer programme built around the history of France’s role in the American Revolution. In a newsletter announcing the initiative, the château said visitors can explore the theme through guided tours, a virtual reality experience, a newly re-hung display, a connected treasure hunt and a new podcast, all presented as part of a historical, festive and immersive season.
The programme places Versailles itself at the centre of the story. According to the château, Louis XVI’s support for the insurgents showed that he was favourable to new ideas, and Versailles became, for a decade, a place where those ideas were promoted. Rather than treating the American anniversary as a remote commemoration, the institution frames it as part of the site’s own political and cultural history.
The new podcast is one of the programme’s main components. Titled around the journey of Lafayette during the American War of Independence, it draws on letters exchanged with his wife, who remained in France. Versailles says the podcast sheds light on the often less well-known role of Lafayette’s wife and on the earliest ties forged between Versailles and the United States. The podcast is available in French and English.
The guided visit focuses on the French contribution to American independence. Versailles says it will examine the role of France in aiding the insurgents, and connects that support to the wider circulation of new political ideas at court. The visitor offer is framed as an entry point into the broader anniversary programme, with the château encouraging advance booking for a 'Passeport coupe-file + VR' ticket for access to the full domain and the new experiences.
A new display opens in the apartment of the Captain of the Guards from 4 July. Versailles says the installation combines paintings and sculptures from the château’s collections and highlights the relationship between Versailles and the United States, while underlining the decisive role played by France and Lafayette. The newsletter does not identify a specific exhibition title for the display, but presents it as a new hanging developed for the anniversary period.
The virtual reality experience, 'Lumière de la Liberté', offers another route into the same history. Versailles says visitors will encounter historical figures such as the Marquis de Lafayette and take part interactively in naval battles and diplomatic discussions. The experience is accessible either with a standalone VR ticket or with the combined 'Passeport coupe-file + VR' option. A connected game, 'Cryptors in the City', extends the programme outdoors by inviting visitors to search the estate for emblematic figures of the Franco-American alliance.
The anniversary offer sits alongside other summer programming at Versailles, including the national '100 x Morellet' presentation of six works by François Morellet, the exceptional opening of the Royal Chapel until 27 September, and the Saturday-night 'Great Musical Fountains Night' series through 19 September 2026. On selected dates, the night fountains programme also incorporates celebrations of the 250 years of American independence, a special 14 July evening and the 'Nocturnes de Feu'.
