The Baltimore Museum of Art’s '(Un)Common Scholars Community Symposium' takes place October 17, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the BMA Main Campus.

The daylong gathering explores Baltimore photography through lived experiences, history and the artist perspective, with artist and scholar presentations and panel discussions. Its closing keynote features curator Dr. Deborah Willis and Dr. Carla Hayden, 14th Librarian of Congress.

Produced in response to the exhibition 'Flashback: Two Centuries of Baltimore Photography,' the program draws on diverse perspectives and the understanding that knowledge about photography and Baltimore lives in many kinds of people.

Participants include Joseph Mario Giordano, SHAN Wallace, Linda Day Clark, Saskia Kahn, NIA JUNE, Kei Ito, Phylicia Ghee and Bill Gaskins, among others.

The related exhibition includes Elinor B. Cahn’s 'I am an American Day Parade' (1980–1981) and 'Mary and Michael Kujawa Raised Five Children in Their Two-and-a-Half-Bedroom Rowhouse in Canton' (1979), Joan Clark Netherwood’s 'Mr. and Mrs. Peter Frenchy' (1978), and Linda G. Rich’s 'Summer Afternoon, East Baltimore Street' (c. 1976–1979).
