Xàtiva has reinstalled the historic Quatre Cantons clock after completing repairs to damage that began when one of its protective glass pieces came loose. The municipal intervention returned the clock to its place in the city’s historic centre following maintenance that authorities said was necessary both to fix the incident and to improve the element’s long-term durability.
According to the city council’s account, the clock was temporarily removed as a preventive measure after the glass panel incident, which raised safety concerns and prompted restoration work. The repair campaign included reattaching a detached metal ring, fixing the dent caused by the impact, replacing and repairing the protective glass, and carrying out a full cleaning of the clock’s mechanisms.
The project also addressed the clock’s electrical system. The council said the circuit box was replaced with a new watertight unit to improve protection against humidity and weather conditions, while the spheres were repainted with a high-resistance coating designed to withstand solar radiation and high temperatures. Those measures were presented as part of a broader effort to preserve the appearance and functioning of the clock over time.
The Quatre Cantons clock is one of the most recognizable features of Xàtiva’s urban heritage. The city describes it as an emblematic element of the historic centre and a familiar part of daily life in the city for decades. Its reinstatement therefore carries significance beyond a routine maintenance job: it concerns the care of a visible civic symbol that helps define the visual identity of the old town.
In a statement included in the municipal report, mayor Roger Cerdà said the work was necessary to recover “an emblematic heritage element” closely identified with Xàtiva. He added that the repairs were also an opportunity to improve various components so the clock can better withstand the passage of time and weather conditions.
The reopening of the clock fits within a wider public conversation about the maintenance of historic urban features. While the work itself was technical and practical, the decision to restore and reinstall the clock reflects the ongoing challenge cities face in safeguarding everyday heritage objects that are not museum pieces, but live in streets and squares as part of the urban landscape.
For Xàtiva, the restored Quatre Cantons clock is both a functional object and a cultural marker. Its return underscores how relatively small-scale conservation work can have a broader heritage value, especially when it concerns an element that is deeply embedded in the city’s historic core and widely recognized by residents.
