Hidden Gallery’s listing identifies Marc Chagall’s ‘L’ange sur fond bleu I’ as a signed colour lithograph from 1969, printed on Arches paper; the entry therefore specifies the artist, the French-titled work, its date, its signed status, its colour-print medium and the paper used for it.
The poster was inspired by a tiny black-and-white lithograph dating from 1959, an image featured in the work ‘Designs for the Bible’, published by Editions Verve; Chagall returned to that image, enlarged it, and created a colour maquette from it.
The finished poster was published to mark an exhibition of works by painters and glassmakers at the Cultural Centre in Reims, giving the poster a stated connection to that exhibition and identifying the venue and city named for it.
