A conversation with Oscar-nominated production designer Karen Murphy and interior designer Andee Hess is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. The evening will explore Murphy’s journey from architecture to the world of film. It takes place at the Tomorrow Theater, the Portland Art Museum’s cinema on SE Division Street in Portland, Oregon; tickets are $15.
Through behind-the-scenes stories and career reflections, Murphy will address how spaces shape storytelling and reveal the creative process behind designing environments that influence character, emotion and narrative on screen. The event frames production design through the relationship between architecture, interiors and cinematic storytelling.
Originally trained in architecture, Murphy transitioned to film after working on Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Moulin Rouge,’ which cemented her commitment to the industry. Her production design credits include ‘A Star Is Born,’ ‘Queen & Slim,’ ‘The Light Between Oceans,’ ‘Chevalier’ and ‘The Order.’ She also art-directed ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,’ ‘Australia’ and ‘The Kite Runner.’
Murphy has collaborated with Luhrmann and Catherine Martin on ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘Elvis,’ earning recognition from BAFTA, the Art Directors Guild and the Academy.
