An Artist Talk with Bob Trotman is scheduled for September 24, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the Columbia Museum of Art. The event will bring Trotman into conversation with Chadric Devin, the museum’s Director of Learning and Engagement.
In that conversation, Trotman will reflect on the evolution of his practice with Devin. Drawing on themes from ‘Body Matters,’ the discussion will explore the relationship between artmaking and the body, including how that relationship shapes both the objects Trotman creates and audiences’ experience of them.
Working primarily in wood, Trotman has spent decades developing a sculptural practice rooted in close attention to material. That practice is also driven by social observation and philosophical inquiry. His approach joins material attention with the observation of society and questions pursued through philosophy.
The human figure is a recurring subject in Trotman’s work, which explores the tensions, contradictions and forces that shape contemporary life. His work is in the CMA Collection and in the featured exhibition ‘Body Matters.’ Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to view his art in the galleries before heading to the theater to hear directly from Trotman.
